The Vatican Museums house one of the world’s greatest art collections, amassed by popes over centuries and spread across 54 galleries within Vatican City. The complex culminates in the Sistine Chapel, whose ceiling and Last Judgment fresco by Michelangelo — including the iconic Creation of Adam — draw millions of visitors each year; entry to the chapel is only possible as part of a Vatican Museums ticket.
Beyond the Sistine Chapel, don’t miss the Raphael Rooms, decorated by the Renaissance master and his workshop, along with extensive collections of classical sculpture, tapestries, and papal treasures gathered across five centuries. A full visit covering the museums, the chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica can easily take four to five hours.
The museums are open Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 8 PM, with last entry at 6 PM, and closed Sundays except the last Sunday of each month, when free entry runs from 9 AM to 2 PM. Arriving right at opening or after 3-4 PM helps avoid the heaviest crowds, and Tuesdays and Thursdays tend to be the quietest days of the week.
