The High Line is a 1.5-mile elevated park built atop a disused 1930s freight rail line running through Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and Hudson Yards.
Trains last ran on the line in 1980; after the tracks were reclaimed by wild meadow plants, local advocates founded Friends of the High Line in 1999 to convert it into a public park, which opened in sections starting in 2009 and was completed by 2019.
The park now features six-and-a-half acres of gardens with more than 500 plant species designed by Piet Oudolf, along with rotating public art, and draws roughly eight million visitors a year via more than ten street-level entrances.
