Six Flags Over Texas opened in Arlington on August 5, 1961, as the first theme park to combine themed lands with thrill rides, an idea inspired by Disneyland. Its original six sections were named for the six flags that have flown over Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, Texas, the Confederacy, and the Modern era.
The park has grown into a major coaster destination with roughly 15 roller coasters, including Titan, a hypercoaster with a 225-foot drop reaching speeds of 85 mph, and the New Texas Giant, which pairs classic wooden-coaster feel with smooth steel track.
Beyond the rides, the park offers water attractions, live shows, and seasonal events throughout the year, cementing its role as a defining piece of Arlington’s identity for more than six decades.
