Christ the Redeemer is a 98-foot Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, completed in 1931 and now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. With arms spanning 92 feet, it overlooks the entire city, Guanabara Bay, and Sugarloaf Mountain from roughly 2,300 feet above sea level.
Most visitors reach the summit via the Corcovado Rack Railway, a cog train that climbs through Tijuca National Park rainforest, though vans and organized tours also make the trip. Once at the top, viewing platforms wrap around the statue’s base for 360-degree panoramas of the city below.
Clear-weather mornings offer the best visibility, since Corcovado is frequently shrouded in cloud by afternoon; checking the live webcam before heading up is a common local tip. Advance ticket booking is strongly recommended, as both the train and the summit itself have capacity limits.
