Meteora

Meteora, meaning “suspended in the air,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greece’s Thessaly region where six historic monasteries perch atop towering sandstone pillars near the town of Kalambaka.

The Great Meteoron and Varlaam monasteries hold the richest collections of religious art, while quieter Saint Nicholas and Holy Trinity offer fewer crowds.

Scenic viewpoints and hiking trails connect the monasteries, and nearby Kalambaka and Kastraki provide a base for exploring the wider countryside. Modest dress is required at every entrance.
