Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg’s iconic concert hall, a glass wave-shaped structure rising from a converted 1960s warehouse on the Elbe River, home to two world-class concert halls and a free public viewing plaza overlooking the harbor and city skyline.
Opened in January 2017 after a decade of construction, the building was designed by Herzog & de Meuron and quickly became Hamburg’s most photographed landmark, its curved glass facade reflecting shifting patterns of water and sky. The free Plaza, reached by Europe’s longest curved escalator, sits 37 meters above ground and offers 360-degree panoramic views of the port, HafenCity, and the historic Speicherstadt warehouses.
Visitors need a free timed ticket to access the Plaza, available same-day at the ticket counter or in advance online, and the space stays open late into the evening for sunset views over the harbor.
