The Taj Mahal is a white-marble mausoleum on the bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, widely regarded as the finest example of Mughal architecture and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631; the main structure was built between 1632 and 1648.

Celebrated for its perfect symmetry, reflecting pools, and inlaid semi-precious stone, the marble seems to change colour through the day, soft pink at dawn, brilliant white at midday, and golden at dusk. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are entombed side by side within.

Buy a timed ticket online in advance and arrive at sunrise for the best light and smallest crowds; February to April is the most comfortable season. Food, tripods, and drones are not allowed, visitors stay silent inside the mausoleum, and limited night viewing is offered around the full moon.
