Sandton City is one of Johannesburg’s largest and most upscale shopping centers, located in the Sandton business district and connected to the adjacent Nelson Mandela Square. The six-level mall houses more than 380 stores, including major department stores like Woolworths and Edgars alongside international fashion brands, a large cinema, restaurants, and a hotel.
The mall is open daily, generally 9am-7pm Monday through Thursday, 9am-8pm on Fridays, and 9am-6pm on weekends, though cinemas, restaurants, and some individual stores stay open later. Nelson Mandela Square, right next to the mall, features a large bronze statue of Nelson Mandela and its own mix of restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating.
Sandton City sits directly above the Sandton Gautrain station, making it an easy and popular stop for visitors traveling between Johannesburg and Pretoria or arriving from O.R. Tambo International Airport, and the surrounding Sandton district is considered one of the safest and most walkable parts of greater Johannesburg.
