L’Aquàrium de Barcelona sits in the city’s old harbor, Port Vell, and ranks as one of the most significant marine leisure and education centers dedicated to Mediterranean sea life in Europe. Opened in 1995, it houses 35 tanks holding roughly six million liters of seawater and around 11,000 animals representing 450 species.
The aquarium’s signature feature is an 80-meter transparent Oceanarium tunnel that lets visitors walk beneath sharks, moray eels, ocean sunfish, and other large marine species swimming overhead. A dedicated Humboldt penguin habitat and the hands-on Explora! zone for children round out the main exhibits, with penguin feedings typically held around 11:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Because it sits directly on Port Vell, the aquarium pairs naturally with a wider harborside outing that can include the nearby Maremagnum shopping center, the Barcelona Wax Museum, and a stroll along La Rambla to the Columbus Monument.
